A man has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend after being found pointing a gun to his head in the same room where the young woman’s body lay bloodied with a knife wound on her neck.
According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, at around 5:44 p.m. on Thursday, deputies responded to a call from Clara Cerquera saying that her son had killed his girlfriend in their apartment located 8660 Weir Drive in Naples. When deputies arrived, they found the female victim, 18-year old Rubi Velasco, dead in the bedroom with a laceration to her neck and a knife nearby.
Investigators found that Cerquera went to check on her son, 20-year old Santiago Burbano, after receiving a call from a family member saying that something might be wrong. Reports say that Cerquera arrived to find the bedroom door locked and Burbano saying “Mommy, mommy I killed Rubi” through the door.
CCSO said that after Cerquera convinced her son to unlock the door, she found him sitting at the desk with a rifle pointed at his head, declaring that he would rather die than go to jail. Cerquera was eventually able to convince Burbano to put down the weapon, and CCSO took him into custody.
Burbano has been booked in the Collier County Jail on the charge of murder and is scheduled to appear in court on October 8.
