A shooting in Lehigh Acres left one man dead and a woman and 11-month old child injured in the early hours of Thursday morning.
According to Undersheriff Carmine Marceno, at 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, deputies were responding to an unrelated call when they heard gunshots near 2813 52nd St W in Lehigh Acres. The deputies were driving towards the sound of the shots when they saw a vehicle fleeing the area. While following the fleeing car towards Sunshine Boulevard, deputies received a report that there had been a shooting and car they were pursuing matched a description of the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect sped up and led deputies on a six minute chase before the officers were able to use a pit maneuver to spin the car, forcing it to come to a stop in a church parking lot.
The car was driven by the suspect, 25-year old Kerome Brown. Marceno said that an investigation by detectives revealed that Kerome had been inside the Lehigh home having an argument with the female victim, who also had her 11-month old child with her. The female called a friend, Edgar Herold, and asked for a ride. Marceno stated that when Herold arrived to pick up the woman and infant, Brown began shooting. Both adults suffered gunshot wounds and the female infant received multiple cuts due to broken glass.
Herold’s wounds proved fatal. The female victim’s injuries are non-life threatening and she is being treated at a local hospital.
This situation was domestic in nature, according to Marceno, but due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, the Undersheriff said he would not give additional details.
Brown faces a number of charges including one count of second degree murder and two counts of attempted murder, and child abuse.
“Sheriff Scott and I could not be more proud of our deputies’ actions,” said Marceno during a press conference. “This incident is yet another example of how our deputies rush toward danger, willingly risking their lives to protect our families, and our community. Their courageous efforts have assured that a homicide suspect is off the streets, and behind bars where he belongs.”
