An Ave Maria student is accused of stealing a large metal letter from his school’s roadside sign.
Michael Tracy, 18, of Chicago, was arrested Thursday by Collier deputies at the intersection of Assisi Avenue and Ave Maria Boulevard.
According to an arrest report, on Monday a representative of Ave Maria Stewardship Community District advised the Collier County Sheriff’s office that a large white metal letter had been removed from their roadside sign over night.
Deputies said they investigated video surveillance, which showed a young man dressed in plaid cargo shorts and hoodie removing the letter V from the sign on Sunday night.
The same young man was seen on video entering the school’s dormitories later that evening, according to reports.
The suspect was identified as 18-year-old Michael Tracy, reports said.
According to reports, Tracy, who is from Chicago, is a student at the college and met with deputies Thursday afternoon to return the stolen letter.
Upon returning the letter Tracy was placed under arrest on a felony charge of grand theft.
