Florida Highway Patrol said that a three-car crash on S.R. 29 which left one driver dead, and another critically injured, may have been alcohol related in a release on Friday.
According to the FHP, a 2007 Toyota Camry was traveling south on S.R. 29 near Oil Well Road. A 2015 Kia Optima and a 2018 Hyundai Elantra were both traveling northbound on S.R. 29 when the driver of the Camry swerved into their lane.
The Camry slammed into the front of the Kia, spinning the vehicle until it came to rest on the west shoulder facing south. The Camry remained stuck in the northbound lane, and unable to dodge the crashed car, the Hyundai collided with its front edge.
The 54 year-old Naples woman driving the Kia, Juana Hernandez, was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital for the treatment of critical injuries.
Javier Gutierrez, 23, of Hialeah, who drove the Elantra, sustained only minor injuries and was not taken to the hospital.
The driver of the Camry that swerved into the northbound lane was killed during the accident. Their name has not been released as next of kin has not yet been notified. According to the FHP report, that driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
