After losing two in a row at home, the FGCU men’s basketball team appeared to right the ship, at least for now, with an 85-78 road win over UT-Arlington on Saturday.
Brandon Goodwin led the Eagles(7-4) with 23 points and eight rebounds against the Mavs, who had won 21 straight games at home.
The Eagles shot 55 percent from the field on Saturday, including 53 percent from the three-point line. Four Eagles scored in double figures, Goodwin, Christian Terrell and Dinero Mercurius with 16 each, and Zach Johnson added 13 points.
FGCU led by as many as 19 in the second half, but needed to hit free throws down the stretch as the Mavs got as close as six, 80-74, with two minutes left to play. The Eagles were 19-of-23 from the free throw line.
Kevin Hervey led the Mavs(8-3) with a double-double, 25 points and 10 rebounds. All five UTA starters scored in double figures, Johnny Hamilton, Nathan Hawkins, and Kaelon Wilson with 10 each, and 15 points from Erick Neal.
FGCU returns home to face Oral Roberts on Saturday, tip-off at 8:15 p.m.
