The FGCU women’s basketball team kicked off the holiday weekend with a big win over a nationally ranked opponent, as the Eagles beat DePaul, 89-84 in overtime on Thursday at the Play4Kay Showcase in Las Vegas.
In a foul-filled game which saw multiple players from both teams leave the game after fouling out, China Dow led the Eagles with 26 points, including going 14-of-15 from the free throw line. Rosemarie Julien added 22 points, including 10-of-11 from the stripe.
FGCU(6-0) led by as many as nine in the fourth quarter before DePaul, ranked No. 21 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, closed the gap and eventually tied the game, sending it to overtime on a three-point play by Chante Stonewall.
After trailing for much of the first few minutes of overtime, the Eagles tied it at 77 on a Julien layup with 2:16 to play, then took the lead for good on a Dow bucket with 1:23 left to go.
The Eagles had four players in double figures, Julien, Dow, Lisa Zderadicka with 12 points, and Tytionia Adderly with 11 points. Mart’e Grays led DePaul with 17 points.
For their efforts, FGCU has earned a matchup with No. 8 Ohio State on Friday, who advanced to the semifinal through a 100-69 win over Memphis.
A 6-0 start to the year marks the Eagles best start to a season since 2010-11, when they opened the year 14-0.
