Citing DNA evidence, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office announced an arrest Tuesday related to a rape case reported in 1998.
Cornelious Florman, 51, was arrested in Virginia, deputies said in a news release, after DNA evidence linked him to a reported sexual assault on Fort Myers Beach in 1998. Florman has been charged with sexual assault, kidnapping, and carjacking.
“We’ve come a long way with DNA analysis since 1998,” Undersheriff Carmine Marceno said in the release. “This is a classic case where you can run from the crime, but you can’t hide from the evidence.”
According to the release, a woman was approached by a man who called himself “Cody” while leaving a bar on Fort Myers Beach who wanted a ride. As the woman as driving, the release said, she was struck in the face and knocked unconscious, later waking up in a wooded area to find she had been assaulted.
Deputies credit the DNA evidence with linking Florman to the case, as part of an effort to send backlogged sexual assault kits for analysis.
According to WTVR in Virginia, Florman was previously convicted of rape in 1986 in Chesterfield, Va.
Florman was arrested in Virginia, and being transported to the Lee County Jail.
