Lee County deputies are searching for a man responsible for the theft of an American flag from a Fort Myers neighborhood.

Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers is asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect who allegedly arrived at the entrance of Kelly Greens area off of Summerlin Road with the intention of cutting down the 18’x 12’ American flag that was displayed on a pole in front of the neighborhood. According to reports, the man took about 15 minutes using a knife attached to a stick to cut the lines that held the banner before fleeing the area on foot with the stolen flag and rope in tow early Tuesday morning.

The individual was caught returning to the scene on surveillance footage with a flashlight as if searching for something. A Kelly Greens resident recovered the knife and stick that were left near the scene where the large $800 flag was stolen.

Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477). All callers will remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward up to $1,000. Tips can also be submitted to or by using the P3Tips mobile app.
