Charles Toombs intercepted Barron Collier quarterback Jacob Kuhlman in the endzone with no time left, and Immokalee survived a furious late rally to win 48-40 on Wednesday at Barron Collier.
“Coach [Culmer] St. Jean does a great job leading the defense,” Immokalee coach Rodelin Anthony said. “The kids take on the persona of the coach, and they’ve got a dread-headed monster leading the way.”
Immokalee broke open what had been a back-and-forth game in the third quarter, scoring 20 straight points to take a 41-21 lead when Indians sophomore quarterback R.J. Rosales threw a pitch to Malcolm Jackson as he was going to the ground to combine for a 10-yard score with 2:04 left in the third.
But Barron Collier(1-2) just wouldn’t go away.
Kuhlman found a diving Dana Brown for a 20-yard score with 10:26 left in the fourth to make it 41-24. Then after a disastrous sequence for Immokalee, a failed fourth-down conversion combined with a penalty gave the Cougars a short field, Kuhlman finished off a quick five play drive to close the gap to 41-34.
Immokalee(3-0) still had Fred Green though. Green ran for 263 yards on 17 carries, part of a three touchdown night. The last one, a 30-yard gash up the middle in the fourth quarter, made it a two-possession game once again.
“That little goblin can run, baby,” Anthony said with a smile. “There’s a reason he put up the yards he did last year. I just hope he gets the recognition he deserves at the end of his senior campaign. Hopefully a school sees this and likes what they see.”
Kuhlman had a great night of his own, throwing for 288 yards and three touchdowns on 23-of-34 passing and rushing for another score, but was intercepted twice by Toombs. The first pick came off a tipped ball and turned into a Jackson 43-yard touchdown early in the third quarter.
“I love the kid, he’s a warrior,” Barron coach Mark Jackson said. “He’s out there, stuff is breaking down and he’s out here making plays. That’s stuff we can build on.”
Kuhlman drove the Cougars on a 12-play 80 yard drive in just under three minutes, tossing a 14-yard score to Jayden Rolle with 2:48 left, closing the gap to 48-40 after a missed two-point conversion. Then Rolle recovered the onside kick, and Barron got all the way down to the Immokalee 6-yard line before a late penalty backed them up to the 21 for the final play of the game.
“We knew we had limited time left and just needed to get the ball down the field as quickly as possible,” Kuhlman said on the final drive. “The last play I just tossed it up to Dana in the endzone to see if he could make a play.”
RARE WEDNESDAY FOOTBALL
Wednesday’s game was moved up in a quick decision on Tuesday to try and get the game in ahead of Hurricane Irma. Collier County schools are closed Thursday and Friday because of the storm. It was one of only two games played in Southwest Florida, the other a 7-6 win for Golden Gate over Lely.
“My hats off to this school and this program right here,” Anthony said. “They didn’t turn it down like other schools did, they rose to the challenge to play football, and ultimately give these kids something to hang their hat on over the long hurricane break.”
