As the calendar shifts to August, it means the start of the school year is nearly here for students, and relieved parents everywhere.
In Lee County, teachers report for their first day of school on Thursday, while students’ first day is Aug. 10. Summer lasts a little longer in Collier County, with students having until Aug. 16 for their first day. Teachers report on Aug. 9.
TAX FREE WEEKEND
A three-day sales tax holiday on back to school items begins on Friday.
The tax holiday will cover school supplies under $15, clothing and footwear under $60, and computers and computer accessories under $750.
BACK TO SCHOOL DEALS
Hadinger Flooring in Naples will be giving away free classroom rugs to Lee and Collier County teachers on Saturday, Aug. 12. This is the eighth year that Hadinger has done the giveaway. To receive a rug, go to Hadinger’s showroom at 6401 North Airport Pulling Road in Naples.
The doors open at 8 a.m. but the rugs are limited so they recommend arriving early to line up. Owner Judy Hadinger says the company will be giving away about 100 rugs this year.
Office Depot and Office Max will be offering a 25 percent off coupon for in-store purchases to all teachers who are members of their rewards program. The program is free to join, and the coupon will be valid from Aug. 13-19. To download the coupon, click here.
OPEN HOUSES AND ORIENTATIONS
Most Lee County schools will be having their open houses this weekend for the start of the school year, allowing parents and students the chance to meet teachers and, in the case of middle and high schoolers, see their schedules for the first time this year.
“Open Houses are an important part of preparing for the new school year. Parents have the opportunity to meet and establish a relationship with their child’s teachers and get a glimpse into their learning day,” district spokesperson Melissa Mickey said. “It is also an opportunity for students to meet their classmates, walk through their schedules and generally diminish first-day jitters.”
The vast majority of the schools will be on Saturday, with a handful of others early next week.

COLLIER PARENT PORTAL
Collier Schools is asking parents who have not already done so to sign up for their parent portal.
The parent portal allows parents to update their emergency contact information, allow or set notifications from the district, and also allows for filling out and completing the beginning of the school year documents.
