After powering its way to a 24-8 start to the season, with wins over multiple Top 10 opponents, FGCU stumbled its way through its conference schedule, just recently getting above .500.
They might just atone for their mishaps in the ASUN conference tournament.
The Eagles needed to win both backs of a doubleheader against Lipscomb on Saturday and did, defeating the Bisons 9-6 and 14-7 to clinch at least the fourth and final spot in the tournament later this month.
FGCU (34-16, 10-8 ASUN) could end up as high as the No. 2 seed, depending on how the weekend shakes out.
“The guys played hard all weekend, and our offense was really special,” said FGCU head coach Dave Tollett. “It’s really good, especially at this time of year, to see the offense hitting the ball all over the park.”
The Eagles honored 8 seniors and redshirt juniors who will be moving on after the season ends.
“It’s a great way for the seniors to go out. You’re remembered by your last act, and they went out winners tonight at Swanson Stadium.”
The Bisons (26-23, 8-10 ASUN) actually opened both games with a lead, but eventually fell victim to the Eagles’ powerful lineup. Two innings after Lipscomb outfielder Michael Gigliotti hit a leadoff home run, FGCU grabbed a 3-1 lead behind three two-out RBI hits from Nick Rivera, Richie Garcia and Cory Fehribach. In game two, Gigliotti again gave Lipscomb and early lead with a lead-off double and score off an RBI groundout, but FGCU responded again with three runs in the first inning.
FGCU heads to face the Miami Hurricanes next week before closing out their conference schedule against Kennesaw State. The ASUN championship begins May 24.
