The FGCU women’s basketball team is already setting up some powerful foes for next year’s home schedule.
SEC powerhouse Kentucky will pay a visit to Alico Arena for the first time on Friday, Dec. 8 for a 7:30 p.m. date with FGCU.
Big Ten member Illinois will also visit Alico Arena in November, marking the first season since 2011-12 that the Eagles will host two Power Five schools in the same year.
FGCU is 8-3 at home against Power Five schools, including victories over Michigan, Wake Forest, Auburn, Virginia Tech, LSU, Michigan State, Florida and Indiana.
Head coach Karl Smesko is looking forward to another tough challenge at home.
“We are really excited to be hosting Kentucky at Alico Arena,” he said. “We always try to put together an attractive schedule for our Southwest Florida fan base. Our players also appreciate the opportunity to play a home game against such a quality opponent.”
The Wildcats finished ranked 18th in the country last year in the Associated Press poll, sporting a 22-11 record.
