For the second time in the last three seasons, the FGCU men’s tennis team has qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
FGCU (10-12) defeated Lipscomb (7-14) on Sunday to claim the 2017 ASUN Tournament title, beating the Bisons by a final score of 4-2. With the conference championship victory, the Eagles receive an automatic bid to participate in the NCAA Tournament as the ASUN representative.
“I knew today was going to be a really tough match,” said FGCU head coach CJ Weber, whose squad upset No. 1-seeded UNF Saturday, 4-3, to advance further in league postseason play.
“I told their coach [Mario Hernandez] at the end that the ASUN has arrived. We’ve been talking about getting this conference better and Lipscomb being a six-seed proves how good the conference is now. Fortunately, we used some of our experience at the bottom to get the W.”
Surviving and advancing through the three-day ASUN Men’s Tennis Championship, which was held at the FGCU Tennis Complex, the No. 4-seed Eagles showed from the start that they were ready to compete by topping No. 5-seed USC Upstate 5-1 Friday. And on Sunday evening, just 13 hours after a dramatic bout against UNF lasted into the early morning, the Eagles held on to finish off the job as an unexpected league champion.
FGCU won’t find out their NCAA Tournament opponent or date of competition for at least another week, all the unknown becoming official during the upcoming bracket release.
