“naplesThe FGCU men’s basketball team will now have three open scholarships to fill over the summer, as forward Kevin Mickle and guard Reggie Reid will not be returning to the program next year, the program announced Friday.

Mickle, a junior college transfer from Broward College after his freshman year, is graduating this spring and not returning, while Reid’s scholarship will not be renewed, team spokesperson Jason MacBain confirmed Friday morning.

“At this time it’s in Reggie’s best interest to have a fresh start, but we appreciate all he’s done for us in his two years,” Dooley said in a team statement. “We respect the decision made by Kevin to do what he thinks is best for him and wish him the best.”

Reid saw his role in the rotation diminish once guard Brandon Goodwin became eligible at the start of last season. After starting 14 games as a freshman, Reid started just three this past season, with 2.9 points and 1.9 assists per game in just under 14 minutes per game.

Last summer, Reid and swingman Rayjon Tucker were caught in a spot of trouble when both were caught by university police in possession of marijuana. Reid was charged with felony possession in July, but the charges were dropped in November. Both players were left home from a summer trip to the Bahamas, along with other undisclosed team disciplines.

Mickle didn’t put up stats, but quickly became a fan favorite in his two years at FGCU for his defensive abilities and tendency to just end up in the middle of everything. Mickle averaged 2.1 points per game in 10.4 minutes.

With the departure of Reid and Mickle, along with the graduation of seniors Marc-Eddy Norelia and Demetris Morant, the Eagles will have three open scholarships to fill.

6-foot-9 3-star freshman Brian Thomas was signed in November.

In recent weeks, a pair of guards have visited the program, Daytona State’s Dinero Mercurius, and Gardner-Webb’s Laquincy Rideau. Rideau would need to sit out as a transfer.
