One of the most sought-after events of the year for bacon and beer lovers was the Fort Myers Beer and Bacon Festival held at Lee Civic Center on Saturday, March 10.
It did not disappoint, with over 80 Florida breweries and 9 food vendors with a portion of the proceeds from the event benefitting Persons With Autism or Disabilities Learn to Swim.
Being that is was early afternoon, I started my day with samples of the most awesome tasting cookie – Bacon and Maple Whiskey by The Tipsy Cookie. My Cupcake Insanity had real bacon bits atop a decadent moist cupcake and cute tiny cakes shaped to present themselves as a burger with fries. Not bad for a gunshot start here at Fort Myers Beer and Bacon Festival.
The VIP area offered Sonny’s BBQ Pulled Pork and Chicken Sliders with Bacon and creamy Mac N’ Cheese and special edition beers. Big Top Brewing exhibited it’s love of chocolate thru a dark porter with flavors of peanut butter and 90% cocoa dark roasted chocolate and a hint of dark fruit reminiscent of a PG&J! It’s name is Becklins Indulgence and will be sought out for purchase in the very near future.
There were countless beer vendors on site. Included in the mix was MIA Beer Company, Fort Misery Coder Company, LaGunitas Brewing Company, Tomoka Brewing Company, Cigar City Brewing, and Motorworks Brewing. Old Soul Brewing from Fort Myers was there with their popular brews.
Most of the food served was $4.00 and under. Incredible was the bacon wrapped meatball from Nico’s Kitchen that paired very nicely with Fort Myers Brewing Company’s High 5 India Pale Ale. A must have is always Johnsonville’s Sausage with special bacon sauerkraut on a bun with whole grain mustard. I was in BBQ heaven with King’s Kitchen’s layered “sundae” with charbroiled pork and mashed potatoes on top with a drizzle of BBQ sauce and cole slaw on the bottom. A tasty disguise! The ultimate in Jerk flavoring and taste was the Smoked Jerk Bacon Taco from Caribbean Flair International Grill. It came with a pop of scotch bonnet pepper sauce and mango slice and covered with cabbage and thousand island dressing!
