Seacrest Country Day School in Naples announced the hiring of Bill Carufe as Director of Basketball Operations last week, also appointed head coach of the boys’ varsity basketball team, and will officially assume his new roles as faculty member and coach Monday, Feb. 27.
Carufe, who served as the Vice President of Sports CLUB in Naples previously, returns to coaching after eight years away from the sideline. As Athletic Director and head coach at Community School of Naples from 2002-08, Carufe won 135 games with five 20-win seasons.
He also led the Seahawks boys’ varsity basketball program to four district titles and one state final four.
“We are very excited to have Bill join us at Seacrest,” noted John Watson, Head of School.
“Bill brings an outstanding record of providing the very best experience for student-athletes, and an excitement for working with young people that is infectious and effective.”
The first order of business for Carufe in his new roles will be to fill the boys’ junior varsity and varsity rosters for the upcoming seasons, as well as do the same for the girls. He’ll be assisted by John Wholihan, who was the interim boys’ varsity basketball coach before Carufe’s recent hiring, while interim assistant Paul Costain will continue his college playing career this fall.
With Carufe overseeing the direction of both programs now, he’ll look to move on-court efforts forward, building off what his predecessors in Wholihan and Costain established at Seacrest.
“John [Wholihan] and Paul [Costain] brought a great deal of enthusiasm for basketball back to Seacrest, and I know that Bill will be able to build on that foundation to produce a winning, successful program over the next few years,” said Mark Marsala, Seacrest Athletic Director.
Returning to the sideline, Carufe sees an opportunity to leave his mark at yet another Collier County school.
“Our goal at Seacrest is to build a sustainable, vertical basketball program for both boys and girls with a foundation of skills that progress from the Lower School to the Upper School,” the new Director of Basketball Operations and boys’ varsity basketball coach looked ahead.
