Runs were at a premium in Wednesday’s Class 2A semifinal between Seacrest Country Day and Jacksonville Christ’s Church Academy.
Pitchers worked themselves out of jams all day long, but eventually Richard Polinsky hit a game-winning RBI single to right for the Eagles, and Christ’s Church defeated Seacrest 2-1 in 10 innings at JetBlue Park.
Tied 1-1 in the ninth, Seacrest had the chance to take the lead, with back-to-back walks to open the inning. But a strikeout followed by a double play from Colin Breuer ended the chance.
Meanwhile, Stingrays reliever Travis Torosian, who replaced senior starter Travis Lopes after 5 2/3 innings, worked his way out of jams in the seventh and the ninth innings, but Seacrest didn’t have enough to escape in the 10th.
Seacrest scored their only run to tie the game in the sixth, and nearly took a 2-1 lead on a double steal attempt, but the Eagles saw it coming and Matt DiNorcia was thrown out at the plate.
For Seacrest, it’s just short of a repeat state title, after winning in 2014.
Christ’s Church had never won a playoff game before this season. Now they face Lake Worth Trinity Christian, who in an odd twist, defeated Deltona Trinity Christian in the other semifinal.
