Four Florida Southwestern State College (FSW) softball players were presented the school’s first athletic scholarship awards during a game back on April 18. The presentation of awards was conducted in the fourth inning at City of Palms Park.
Backing up a promise made about a year ago, the FSW Foundation and the Suncoast Credit Union merged to match scholarship donations for the college’s select athletes.
The inaugural winners were all members of the Buccaneer softball team, who held a 24-game winning streak until the last game of the regular season this year. Marta Fuentes, a second baseman; Kayla Ranglawha, a catcher and designated hitter; Courtney Gettins, the team’s pitching ace; and shortstop Mikayla Werahiko were all chosen on the premise of academics, community service and on-field performance.
“We said we would match Suncoast’s generous offer of $10,000 per year for scholarships for our student-athletes,” said FSW President Dr. Jeff Allbritten.
With help from the FSW Foundation, each player was given funds for their success.
“Suncoast strives to promote the education, health and emotional well-being of children in the communities we serve,” said Cindy Helton, Executive Director of the Suncoast Credit Union Foundation. We are proud to support not only excellence on the field, but also in the classroom through this scholarship program.”
