A three vehicle accident just south on Immokalee killed one on Sunday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Stephen Elaesser Jr., 82, was driving southbound on his Sukuzi Burgman scooter when he was hit from behind by another vehicle.
According to the incident report, Nimesh Patel, of New York, was distracted by what police say was an electronic device and failed to notice Elaesser slowing down.
Elaesser was thrown from the vehicle as a result of the impact, where he landed in front of oncoming traffic. Reports say a third vehicle, a Lexus, attempted to avoid Elaesser in the northbound lane but rolled over him.
Alcohol was not a factor, and Elaesser was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, reports say. Next of kin have been notified.
