Lee Memorial Health System Foundation along with Germain Arena is hosting Skate for Hope, headlined by U.S. Olympians and U.S. National champions, on Saturday, Aug. 29.
Skate for Hope wants its participants to feel empowered, to better cope with a friend or family member’s cancer diagnosis. It works toward this goal by honoring those loved ones who have been diagnosed with cancer.
The skaters actively participate in health and wellness education programs at weekly rehearsals and raise funds for cancer research. Amateur cast members are also provided with mentoring and support from the attending world-class athletes, who, themselves, have had parents endure a cancer diagnosis.
Skate for Hope was founded in 2004 by Naples resident, life-long figure skater and 16-year breast cancer survivor Carolyn Bongirno. Bongirno, 33, battled and overcame a stage-three breast cancer diagnosis. She created the organization to teach children and young adults that they can help themselves, and others, by volunteering their time and talents.
A portion of proceeds from the event will be donated to support pediatric oncology research at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.
This year’s headliners include Ashley Wagner, a three-time U.S. national champion and 2014 Olympic team bronze medalist, Emily Hughes, a 2006 Olympian, Max Aaron, a U.S. national champion, Adam Rippon, a U.S. national silver medalist, Caydee Denney & John Coughlin, U.S. national pairs champions, Haven Denney & Brandon Frazier, U.S. national silver medalists, Tarah Kayne & Danny O’Shea, U.S. national bronze medalists and Piper Gilles & Paul Poirier, Canadian national silver medalists.
The event begins at 5 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased online through Ticketmaster and all its locations. Tickets can also be purchased at Germain Arena box office and at the door.
Lower bowl seating begins at $19.00, up to $59 as posted on Skate for Hopes’ website.
