The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s basketball team came within 8 points of returning to the Big Dance for a second time in three years.

This year, Bernard Thompson hopes to slam them back into contention.

In a recent unveiling of the Top 10 Returning Dunkers in college basketball, according to ESPN.com, FGCU senior Bernard Thompson comes into the season ranked the eighth-best returning dunker, behind the likes of Arizona’s Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Louisville’s Montrezl Harrell. Thompson’s thunderous dunk from last year’s Atlantic Sun Championship game against Mercer is shown on ESPN’s list.

Video of the dunk may be found here.

FGCU made headlines in 2012 for being the first 15-seed ever to make the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

Already one of FGCU’s most decorated student athletes, Thompson enters his senior year one of the leaders of the Eagles’ returning squad. He is already the school’s all-time leader in scoring and steals, and was recently named the Atlantic Sun Conference’s preseason Player of the Year.

FGCU returns four of last year’s starters, including senior point guard Brett Comer. Comer was voted the A-Sun’s Facebook fan-favorite player of the year, according to fgcuathletics.com.

Comer and Thompson make up one of the more formidable starting backcourts in the nation, with 206 combined career games and 199 career starts, according to fgcuathletics.com

The Eagles open their preseason slate against Nova Southeastern at Alico Arena on Nov. 15. They’ll also play host to a Gulf Coast Showcase tournament along with the FGCU women’s basketball team at Germain Arena. The tournament will be the weekend of Nov. 24-26.
