FGCU’s show at the big dance last year proved to put Dunk City on the map. This year, they fell short to Mercer in their A-Sun Championship game, which knocked them out of the NCAA Tournament.
For FGCU’s first appearance in the NIT and second postseason appearance, eighth-seeded FGCU was placed against No. 1 FSU, in a first-round game Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Tallahassee. The game will be aired on ESPN2.
In 2012-2013, the Eagles made history when they were the first 15 seed to ever make it to the sweet 16, after upsetting No. 2 Georgetown and No. 7 San Diego State. They ended their run after losing to the Univeristy of Florida team, which holds a No. 1 spot this year.
FGCU will be playing FSU for the first time after previous head coach Andy Enfield left FSU for FGCU in 2011. This is something the team and fans have been wanting to see.
FSU went to the NCAA tournament for four straight years , 2008-2012 and got as far as the Sweet 16. Due to being in the ACC, FSU plays many of the top teams in college basketball every year. Including Duke, UNC and Virginia. They also came close to beating the No. 1 ranked team, Florida this year.
If FGCU comes out with a victory tonight, they will go on to play the winner between Georgetown and West Virginia.
