23 injured, 5 critically and 2 deceased after an unnamed drunken man drove through barricades at the famous SXSW event. This annual event started in 1987 and draws tens of thousands of attendees for their music, film and interactive conference.
The two who were killed were riding a moped when the drunken driver hit them. The driver also hit numerous people who were exiting the Mohawk Club along with a cab before exiting his vehicle and attempting to run.
The Austin, Texas streets during this event are known to be packed with crowds, which is why many of the streets are closed down and can only be accessed by foot. However, this driver seemed to ignore those rules as he drove right through them.
“Police said the man pulled into a nearby gas station in a silver Toyota sedan after an officer working a drunken-driving patrol tried to stop him. He wove his way through a series of parked cars, then took off at high-speed the wrong way down a one-way street. He took a right turn on Red River Street, crashing through a barricade and narrowly missing a police officer who was standing guard.” – NYPost
The driver is in custody and will be facing two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle.
